Visual Arts

Beginning in first grade and continuing through sixth, students meet with the art teacher each week and receive instruction on a variety of techniques.

The curriculum has been developed to foster self-expression, creativity, and awareness of the world around us. Students learn about arts of other cultures, the great masters, and the importance of a visual history. The art curriculum is also integrated into the social studies and language arts curriculum.

Students work with a variety of media including acrylic and tempera paints, watercolors, inks, crayons, chalk, oil pastels, charcoal, paper mache, plaster, wood, and clay. In addition, the school owns a potter's wheel, a kiln, and a large weaving loom.

Student art work is proudly displayed at Grace, and each child has at least one piece of art displayed in the annual school-wide art show. In the broader community, Grace students have exhibited at local cafes and galleries. Grace students have been featured in the WETA calendar and have been selected as winners in the Washington Post wrapping paper contest.
