Grace encourages students to appreciate their democratic citizenship, our diverse cultural heritage, and the roles they play in contemporary society. Students learn how to think critically and creatively in exploring social issues, institutions, and how to champion individual and group causes. They also develop an understanding of the meaning and importance of global interdependence.
Where possible, social studies are integrated with other subjects through interdisciplinary thematic units. Art, music, language arts, library, literature, math, religion, science, technology, Spanish, and Latin frequently complement the social studies curriculum through cooperative planning among classroom and special subject teachers.
Our location in the Washington metropolitan area provides unique opportunities for field experiences that extend the social studies curriculum. Current events and community and civic issues are used to provide relevant learning activities. Thinking, reasoning, negotiation, decision making, and participation skills are interwoven into the social studies instruction and permit students to become actively in learning.
Through a program that is meaningful, integrated, value-based, challenging, and active, Grace helps prepare students to become contributing members of our world community.
