Mathematics

The mathematics curriculum at Grace is designed to prepare students for an increasingly information-driven, technological future by building strong foundations in mathematical understanding, computation, application, and analysis. Hands-on activities lay the foundation for the mastery of mathematical concepts and understanding. Small-group work provides opportunities for students to communicate mathematically, defend their reasoning, and report using mathematically correct language.

Students are exposed to estimation, geometry, logic problems, probability, algebraic symbols, and graphing that increase in complexity as they progress through the grades. Manipulatives, measuring tools, calculators, and computers are readily available in grades K-6 and employed to accommodate different learning styles and demonstrate different approaches to problem solving.

The school's math curriculum follows the recommendations of The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Math Resource

Grace Episcopal Day School's advanced mathematics program is designed for the student who has high achievement and interest in mathematics. The program is designed to lay a strong foundation of mathematical understanding, computation, application, and analysis. Students in grades four through six are selected for the program each fall based on the results of their math grade on the progress report in the previous grade, their performance on the ERB standardized test, their performance on an entry test, and their previous math teacher’s recommendation. Students completing this course work will most likely continue an advanced math regimen through school and be prepared for career studies that require technology and mathematics as their core requirements.

The foundation of Grace's advanced math program is based upon intensive work covering all operations necessary for pre-algebra skills and completion of the Glencoe Pre-Algebra program (which also integrates geometry). A variety of websites, games, and resources are used to enrich math and related concepts. Assigned projects allow students to investigate math in a variety of ways. Students develop an understanding of mathematics through real life contexts and situations. Some classes do research and create reports about famous mathematicians. Working with abstract and symbolic problems is an integral part of the curriculum, requiring understanding and knowledge of these difficult concepts.
