GEDS Bibliography Guide

When writing a bibliography, do not indent the first line of the entry. Indent the lines that follow. Fourth and fifth graders may refer to page 231 in Writers Express for additional help.

Books with One Author

Author. (last name first) Title. (underlined or italicized)City where the book was published: Name of publisher, copyright date.

EXAMPLE:
Athenton, Pike. Fish with Wings. Miami: Marine Press, 1990.


Books with Two Authors

First author’s name (last name first), and second author’s name (first name first). Title. (underlined or italicized) City where the book was published: Name of publisher, copyright date.

EXAMPLE:
Ellison, Bryan, and John Smith. How to Swim. Washington: Cue Ball Press, 2000.


Books with Three or More Authors

First author’s name (last name first), second author’s name (first name first), and third author’s name (first name first). Title. (underlined or italicized) City where the book was published: Name of publisher, copyright date.

EXAMPLE:
Ellison, Bryan, Suzy Tuna, and John Smith. How to Swim Upstream. Washington: Cue Ball Press, 2000.


ENCYCLOPEDIAS

“Article title.” (in quotation marks) Title of the encyclopedia. (underlined or italicized) Edition. (may be a year) Date published.

EXAMPLES:
“Flying Fish.” Joe’s Encyclopedia. 2nd ed. 1993.

“Flying Fish.” Encyclopedia Ellisono. 1999 ed. 1999.


MAGAZINES & NEWSPAPERS

Author (last name first, if available). “Article title.” (in quotation marks) Title of the magazine. Date of the magazine (day/month/year): pages of the article.

EXAMPLES:
Cookie, Ivanna. “Fish in the Sky.” Airliner Magazine 12 July 1999: 12-13.

“Fish With Wings.” Sea Crawler August 2000: 19-22.


WEB SITES

Name of the author or company that owns the site. “Title of the item.” Date you looked at or copied the site (day/month/year) URL.

EXAMPLES:
U.S. Census Bureau. “American Fact Finder: Facts About My Community.” [Online] 30 November 1999.
http://fact finder. census.gov/java prod/dads.ui.homePage.HomePage.

Author. (if given, last name first) “Title of the article.” (in quotation marks) Title of the CD. (underlined or italicized) Edition, release, or version. (if applicable) [CD-ROM] Name of the publisher, year of publication.

EXAMPLES:
“Bronte, Emily.” Discovering Authors. Vers. 1.0. [CD-ROM] Gale, 1992.

INTERVIEWS

EXAMPLE:
